Texas Buried Secrets by Virginia Vaughan takes readers on a wild Texas ride. Deputy Cecile Richardson is burdened with solving a string of murders that look to be related. But the serial killer sets his site on Cecile, and Sherriff Josh Avery is concerned for Cecile’s safety.

I love the complexity of the plot. Cecile struggles with that one case she never solved involving the disappearance of her friend. Josh is still dealing with the death of his wife and the suspicion that he was somehow involved with her death. The two team up to stop a killer, solve two cold cases, and try to stay alive. The romantic sparks turn into flames as Josh tries to protect Cecile.

I highly recommend this story for readers that like complex plots, cold cases and a healthy dose of suspense and action!

Buried Cold Case Secrets is a must-read for suspense fans. Melanie Hutton returns home to take a job as a forensic anthropologist. But she has a secret motive: to find her best friend’s remains and put the past horrors of her abduction behind her. But someone doesn’t like her returning, and she has to rely on police detective Jason Cooper for protection. Except he’s the last person she wants to see since he blames Melanie for leaving his sister behind when they were abducted.

This book is over-the-top action packed. Melanie pretty much runs for her life from the very first page. While fast paced, the story dives deep into the characters. Melanie has to overcome quite a bit from the trauma of the past, and Jason has to put aside his anger in order to protect Melanie. Both unite in wanting to find out the truth of what happened all those years ago.

The story is fast-paced and a fantastic suspense novel. I love stories where I have no idea how it will end, and this had me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. Be sure to check it out!

Overall Rating:
5 stars (I loved it, couldn’t put it down)

Suspense Rating:
5 stars (Non-stop edge-of-your-seat suspense from start to finish)

Cold Case Double Cross book cover and latte with hearts

Cold Case Double Cross by Jessica R Patch gives readers plenty of action and suspense from the start. Police detective Cash Ryland’s brother is in jail for murder, but Cash doesn’t think he’s guilty. He convinces his high school ex-girlfriend, cold case investigator Mae Vogel, to take up the case. Too bad he and Mae have a rocky past. But Mae soon realizes that they are both being targeted for getting too close to the truth.

With lots of suspects and plenty of life-or-death danger, this story is a definite home run for a suspense fan like me. The characters had chemistry and the plot twists kept me rapidly flipping pages until the end. The ending was quite unexpected, and I love books that keep me guessing who the culprit is until the very last page. This is the first novel I’ve read by this author, and now I’ve just added a bunch of her novels to my wish list.

Missing in the Desert https://bestinsuspense.com/review/missing-in-the-desert/ Fri, 23 Jul 2021 23:29:24 +0000 https://bestinsuspense.wpcomstaging.com/?p=1816 Who would believe that Mara Castillo's sister—missing and presumed dead—suddenly sent a one-word text? Now Mara wants answers, even if it means stepping into a killer's sights with her brother's best friend, rancher Levi Duke, as her only protection. But with someone who has everything to lose after her, uncovering a long-buried secret could save her life…or claim it.

Missing in the Desert cover and latte with a heartMissing in the Desert by Dana Mentick brings action-packed drama, suspense and danger to a desert setting. Mara Castillo and her brother are attacked when visiting the ranch Levi Duke bought. With Seth in the hospital, Mara decides to help Levi keep the ranch afloat. But someone doesn’t want her in town, and she starts to connect the attacks to her sister that went missing and was presumed dead.

Lots of action in this story made me a fan. I’ve never read anything by Dana Mentick, but I’m sure I’ll read more. From a fantastic setting to the mystery of Mara’s sister, the book kept me totally entertained from start to finish. I think this is probably one of the only cowboy books I’ve read, but I loved Levi Duke. His quiet yet steady mannerism was the perfect match for Dana’s feistiness. Great characters and an intriguing plot line made this an enjoyable story.

Obsession is a must-read for suspense fans. Emma Winters is a park ranger who is doing a historical project involving an archeological dig. But someone doesn’t want her uncovering long-buried secrets in the state park. She finds herself in the cross-hairs of a stalker as she searches for the truth. Old mysteries resurface and Sam Ryker steps in to help keep Emma safe. He and Emma have a sorted past, but of course, old feelings reignite!

I love stories with lots of plot twists and red herrings. Patricia Bradley does a great job of casting shade on several characters. It took me a while to pin down the real culprit – so many people had motive. The setting for the story is unique. There aren’t many stories set in Natchez Trace, let alone characters that are park rangers. This is book two in the series, but you could definitely pick this novel up as a stand-alone.

The story is fast-paced and a fantastic suspense novel. Be sure to check it out!
