Murders in the Marquee is one of the best historical mysteries I’ve read in a long time. It checks all the boxes for me: fast-paced, an intriguing first chapter, an endless list of suspects, a relatable amateur sleuth, and loyal yet quirky sidekicks.
I’ve been on the fence about the new trend of historical murder mysteries. You’d think I love them but I tend to find them slow in the set up. But Murders in the Marquee proved me wrong! This story starts out with what looks like a body falling from the balcony of a hotel.–except no body was found. Danger on page one! And from start to finish, I loved everything about this novel. The story has one setting – the Grand Mallard Marquee hotel in San Francisco. This gives off Agatha Christie vibes for sure – one location where everyone is “trapped” with the murderer. And anyone could be the culprit. Readers will fall in love with Kitty Rossi, a young woman who wants to make it on her own in an era where that isn’t acceptable. And Saul Niffler just wants to untangle himself from his past mistakes. Plus, the ducks might as well be the main character as they steal the show.
This book is one to move up your must read list. If you like mysteries, heartwarming characters, exciting twists and turns, and a “who-dun-it” page turner, look no further than Murders in the Marquee.
